May 14/13 – Jeff, Greg and Andrew

Jeff is a new student and very experienced sky diver with 3000 jumps on his belt – definitely not new to flying a canopy. We have completed ground school in the afternoon and went to our flying field. Strong wind but manageable – I gave Jeff the small training glider and after 5 min explanation he was able to kite like a pro… Crazy! I have never seen anything like this. I had some work to do on one of the motors so I let Jeff to play with the canopy and every time I would look back at him it would be up and flying. In 10 min he was where others take 4 – 6 hrs to get. Amazing! We then proceeded to do our engine intro and powered runs.

After this was completed, wind came down and it was time to fly. I went for short flight to test the air. Bit thermally but not too bad. Jeff took off first after 5 hrs of training. It took him little bit to settle in. Flying under power is bit different then non-motorized under skydiving canopy. Then Greg took off. I put the GO PRO on his helmet – I have very nice footage from his first flight. Have to edit it – the file is huge. Then it was Andrews turn – no problem, nice forward and he was off too.

Summary: Jeff two flights, Greg 3 flight and Andrew 2 flights

Great evening at the field and congrats on first 2 solo flights Jeff and Andrew!

June 12/13 – Busy night. Graham is Superman!

4 guys: Todd who came at 5 pm to brush up on his ground handling. At 6 Hugues, Graham and Herman showed up. The forecast was excellent for flying but perhaps not so great four training. In other wrods there was not a lot of wind and it was dropping rapidly. First was Herman to try. We have aborted about 6 inflations until he finally got one lined up. he started to throthle up but at the moment of lift of he proceeded to jump into the seat which is classic beginner mistake, he realized what he did started to run again but things weren’t working out anymore and he needed to shut off the engine and abort and that is what he did. Hugues was ready to go he also busted one inflation, but on the second one, he was off. He did pull tremendous amount of break on the take off and I had to tell him on the radio to release. But he was in the air nonetheless and I thought that here goes again he’s going to rip eight flights. Meanwhile Todd was setting his paramotor and paraglider – getting ready to fly. Graham showed up and he was also unpacking his new Cima K 2 S and setting his paramotor. Hughes came around to land, beautiful lending, but then he walked back to where we were and he said that he pulled a muscle in his leg on the take off and may not be able to fly tonight anymore. What a bummer. Todd set up at this point, we have absolutely no wind, nice forward inflation, full power he runs and he’s in the air except he can’t get into the seat. Oh crap. I know how uncomfortable that is. Well couple quick circles and he comes into land. Absolutely beautiful and flawless landing. Hermann is ready to go again. He set up and after four failed inflations I realize that he’s lacking basic ground handling skills. We have to go back to the drawing board and start on the ground handling again. Meanwhile Graham is going around like a energizer bunny. Four flights and four touch and goes later he wraps it up – what a beautiful flying he is really ripping it. It was kind of bittersweet night – I was hoping that Hughes would be able to do more flying and I was hoping for more wind. Everybody did well giving their means and Graham is a Superman!

June 11/13 – Do not ask me about the Moster engine unless you are over 200 lb

OK. I just spend 45 min trying to convince this guy on the phone that Moster engine will be too big for him at 168 lb. Guys, I am getting tired of this. Please trust me, Moster is very powerful engine that is good for BIG guys. Is you are under 200 lb, forget it! If you buy it, you will regret it.

Also I often hear  “I would like to foot launch, trike and do tandem and all this with one set of gear”. It is impossible! If you try to purchase something that will do it all, it will be heavy and hard to foot launch in low wind and not powerful enough for tandem – which is illegal anyway unless you are an instructor. Just focus on one thing and one thing only – then you have a chance to enjoy this sport. The lightest gear, the better. Honestly! Please and thank you.

June 11/13 – Holy crap!

And you thought PPG was on the edge eh?

June 10/13 – Let me know about video

Hi guys,

Can you please let me know how you see videos on my site? Someone just told me that on his computer all videos are sideways.

Please email me and say I see videos OK or say I see videos sideways or upside down.

Also let me know which system you are on – MAC or Windows or Linux. I work on MAC.

Thanks I appreciate this.

June 9/13 – PPG course day 2 pm – Hugues manages 9 flights and Herman 2

Got to the field at field 4 pm to meet Herman and Hugues. I was not sure how Hugues will do as in the morning he had a serious mental block but as it turn out in the afternoon with nice steady breeze he quickly took of and landed 9 times!  Great work Hugues.

Hugues ground inflating with motor on his back.

Herman is getting ready.

He has purchased very powerful unit with Moster engine – a bit of overkill for his size

photo-6

After some prep – Herman too off. All was going well except he was reluctant to add power – I guess being a bit timid having such powerful unit. He copied the terrain at about 70 ft and then his engine coughed and quit. He made pretty good downwind landing. We were wondering what happened but after I have looked at his tank, it was quite clear to me that the must have sucked an air bubble into carb as the fuel was sloshing around on take off  Herman had only 2 ” of fuel at the bottom of the tank?! Not a good idea.

After this flight wind was dying off and Herman started to have hard time inflating his canopy. I have suggested to use one of my super light units along with the Cima K 2 to have another flight and build confidence. In no time Hermann was in the air again this time the engine didn’t quit and he had a very nice flight.

Very successful evening!

June 8/13 – Pat is enjoying flying…

Pat was recent student.

He is back home, fully licensed, flying on his own…

Check out his latest flight here:

Ground handling at the field. We had ideal conditions for 2 hours than wind picked up and stayed strong. Starange! All 3 are ready to fly – just need proper gentle and smooth wind.

We then proceeded to work on motors. Got familiar with starting procedures, fuelling, pre flight check and so on. We also di the powered runs.
