Oct 14/14 – Note from Ilya

Hi Andre,

Thank you for the amazing experience I had in your PPG course! This was most certainly one of the coolest things I have ever done! It wasn’t easy at first (and even frustrating at times), but after a few days of ground handling and the first solo flight, everything suddenly became so obvious and natural – oh, what a wonderful feeling it was! I know I took things rather slowly, and that’s why I ended up with only 4 flights completed at the end of the course, but this was my intention since I wanted to be 100% confident in my ability to keep everything under control before proceeding with the first solo. I think this approach worked really well for me: on the day of my first solo, from the moment you said “go-go-go, full power”, I knew exactly what I was doing despite the rush of totally new sensations. I think it will be fair to say that I am now addicted to powered paragliding :)

I am really looking forward to continuing my training! With that said, I think I am done for the season for a number of reasons. Mainly, I have to focus on sorting out what to do about my career as I am leaving my current job as of 2014. Once I have that figured out, my plan is to purchase a motor and resume training next season – around May-June. In the meantime, I will keep practicing ground handling with my awesome paraglider :) I will also get the theoretical part of the licensing requirement done before the next season.

It wish you pleasant travelling this Fall, and I will see you in 2015!

Best regards,
Ilya

P.S. Andre, please feel free to to publish this letter on the website, if you’d like. If you do, could you please add “linkedin: Ilya Perederiy” in case anyone I met in the course wants to connect.

P.P.S. I’ve been reading your notes on the old website — so you’ve managed to lock yourself in the trailer once? I think that beats me locking my car with the keys left inside, although the “rescue tool” you made in my case was most spectacular! :)

Fancy beer – lovely!

Sep 14/14 am – PPG training with Gil

Gil added 2 more flights to his log book. We have tried for third but no luck. Both flight were nice and stabilized. That is the way I like it!

Sep 12/14 pm – PPG training with Ilya, Gil, Lawrence and Mike

Very good air at the field. Mike added 4 more flights to his log – he is now completely independent. Lawrence ground handled with his canopy, it was going very well but he has hesitated to strap the engine on and ended up missing his opportunity because wind has died on him. Ilya added 2 more flights to his log and Gil managed his first solo! That is only after 2 days of training. His ground handling was above average I wish I could do say that about his flight. Take off was good, climb out too but the rest of the flight was bit unstable with continuous oscillations. The landing was also rough to too overcorrecting on final approach. But it was first flight none the less, well done Gil and congrats, they will only get better.

Sep 12/14 am – PPG course with Ilya

This am just me and Ilya. Very good steady wind. Ilya has managed 2 flights using forward inflations. I have never been any one so well prepared for first flight. Ilya took extra time to get to the first solo but he executed it perfectly. It seems like that is how he approaches everything, slow, steady with perfection. He will make an excellent and safe PPG pilot.

It was quite cold, only 12 Celsius. Brrrr.

CONGRATULATIONS Ilya on your first solo flight/s.

Sep 10/14 am – PPG training with Ilya and Gil

Started ground handling with Gil at 8 am. Good conditions for reverse. Ilya arrived at 8:30 and by then wind was up to 15 km/h. By the time we have set up we had had increases to 20 km/h and it started to overpower him knowing that the wind will only increase we have aborted our attempts on first solo and went back to kiting. Ilya is ready to fly, we just need the right weather. Gil has nailed reverse in very short time. See video. He will fly soon too.
